Lingering and Looking Back

Genesis chapter 19 is sad in many aspects. It is much like a story told that goes from one tragedy to another.  Please read all 38 verses for the setting.

This is one of the saddest chapters in the Word of God.

1. A father vexes his righteous soul in a Godless land.
2. A city is totally given over to the worst of sins, the sin of sodomy!
3. A father offers his two virgin daughters to be abused by these wicked sodomites.
4. A family loses two daughters, two son-in-laws and all their family to fire and brimstone from heaven.
5.  A husband loses a wife to the world, flesh and devil.
6. Two remaining daughters lose their mother as well.
7. A family says goodbye in the worst of circumstances, fire and brimstone.
8.  A father goes so low that he commits incest and conceives sons by both his virgin daughters! (unimaginable!)
9.  A father is responsible for allowing his two daughters to marry in an unequal yoke out of the will of God and suffer the consequences. (two left behind)

How different things would have been if Lot had let Abraham choose first.

Look at 2 Pet. 2:2-9 and notice vs. 8 “For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.”

Lot knew a long time before he left that he was in the wrong place and out of the place of God’s blessing.

I believe God’s people always know when they are headed in the wrong direction and into trouble when we ignore the condition we are in Spiritually.

This message should be especially helpful to men who have the ultimate responsibility of giving guidance to their families.

In fact, men, fathers, your guidance or lack thereof is setting the stage for you families’ success or failure…Which will it be?

If Lot could have seen what was coming later in his life, he would have changed his direction and made different decisions.

He had been there long enough to know that he was not in a good place and he “vexed his righteous soul day by day…”

If you are saved, you need to hear what thus saith the LORD in 2 Peter 2:9 “The LORD knoweth how to deliver the Godly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.”
What does a person or a family face in living in the world, lingering and looking back?

1.  Desires that are ungodly are stirred up in the heart.
2.  Division and eventual separation of loved ones caught in the trap.
3.  Direction is lost and they cannot see where they are going when you focus on where you have been.
4.  Damage is sure to come and be more that can be imagined.
5.  Destinies are sealed forever!
6.  And last of all, VS. 33-38 Lot never lost sight of the debt of his sin…every time he looked at his empty house and his illegitimate sons, Moab and Ammon…he was reminded of his failure.

Do not linger and look back…Leave the world of sin now while you can, before it cost you everything near and dear to you.

May God help us to have the full victory and never look back.
