The greatest victory in life is the victory over self
I want to dedicate this article to the memory of those who paid the ultimate price of the freedom of America as well as other nations.
Jesus said in John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Of course, He was speaking of His own death for the sins of the world. (see also Rom. 5:6-10)
The Bible likens the Christian life to the life of a soldier. Please read 2Tim. 2:1-14 and see that the comparison of a soldier to a Christian.
- A good soldier never quits.
V3 "Endure hardness as a good soldier."A good soldier must endure hardness. The conditions are less that comfortable sometimes and a good soldier cannot choose when he can fight. He cannot pick his desired conditions. He cannot tell his commanding officer, "I do not want to fight in this weather. Can't you see it is raining? Let's wait until it quits."
- A good soldier is disciplined.
V4 "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life." A good soldier doesn't stop along the march and visit on the sidelines while his comrads march on in war.
- A good soldier seeks to please his commanding officer.
V4 "That he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier." This is a military requirement and it must a Spiritual requirement. Christians should please the LORD just as a soldier pleases his commander.
- A good soldier is dedicated to the cause no matter what the cost.
See 2 Timothy 4:5-7. A good soldier finishes his course, always ready to go; always willing to pay the price; always willing to forsake home, health, wealth, family, luxuries, time and even life itself.
- Finally , A good soldier dies in honor.
2 Tim. 4:7 , "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Paul was about to die for his faith, for his country (Heaven) and he states that he had stayed the course up to the end. Being a good soldier means to be committed to the end, even if it means death. This is true of Christians as well as our military.
I know of no one who has my respect more than a Christian who dies in honor after serving Christ, or a soldier of our nation who dies for the cause of freedom. You who have served and have the scars to prove it, We salute you! You who are still serving, putting your life on the line daily, We salute you! Those who paid with their lives, We salute them! We count you all as friends.
