Article delayed by the death of my 90 year old aunt in Valdosta, Georgia. Aunt Mary Bonner was a sweet Christian lady, sister of my mother Nadi Rentz Humphries. Aunt Mary was a widow for 33 years.
I have listed a number of the verses dealing with the subject of widows in the Bible. The most often repeated subject concerning widows is the treatment or mistreatment of them. God commands the blessing of widows in many of the verses I reference below. He also places a curse on those who mistreat or misuse widows. De 27:19 "Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen." God also tells us that He is a “Judge of the widows” meaning that He will take up their cause and judge those who misuse or abuse them. Ps 68:5 “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows.”

In regard to the Church and its responsibility to widows, we are told that there are guidelines to their care. According to 1 Tim. 5:4-16, a widow is not the responsibility of the Church if she is under 60 years old. She must have only been married one time and if she has children or nephews, they are to take care of her needs. She is also to be a faithful saint of God with good works. The word “relieve” in the text means help or serve. Also In Acts 6:1, the issue was the “daily ministration” which meant relief or service.
Then 1 Tim. 5:9,11, the widows under the age of 60 are not the responsibility of the Church.
