The Steps of a Good Man

Psalm 37:23 states, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD." There are two choices in life: Having God to order our steps in His will or ordering our own steps by our own will. Job 14:16 tells us God numbers our steps, and 31:4 counts all our steps and in 34:21 sees all our goings. Proverbs 5:21 tells us God ponders all our goings and 16:9 tells us God directs our steps. In Psalm 119:133 David prayed, "Order my steps in thy Word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me." God will order our steps if we follow His will by His Word as we are led by His Spirit. In Psalm 37:23, the last part we see, "and He delighted in his way." God delights to see His people, the redeemed of Jesus Christ, walking in ordered paths. We cannot sing, "Have thine own way" and insist on having our own way! We cannot sing "Just as I Am" and stay just as we are! When God orders, anything other than what He orders is out of order! Spurgeon said, "When this pilot undertakes to steer their course, their vessel shall never split upon the rock, run upon the sands, or spring a leak, so as to sink in the seas. To be sure, He will see them safe in their harbour." Another said, "If a man will choose God for a friend, he shall travel securely through the wilderness that hath many beasts of prey in it; he shall pass safely through this world; for he only is safe that hath God for his guide." In ordering our steps, God is not trying to make life miserable or spoil all our fun! WHY DOES HE ORDER OUR STEPS?

  1. To keep us safe. It is not for our hurt, rather for our help.
  2. To keep us headed in the right direction.
  3. To keep us from the pollutions of the world.
  4. To keep us from unnecessary problems and circumstances.
  5. To keep us on the path of blessing and success.
  6. To keep us from the path of the Destroyer.

Why would we want it any other way?
Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 state, "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Psalm 119:105, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:133, "Order my steps in the Word: and let not iniquity have dominion over me." If you are saved, you need to know that Satan cannot lay a trap or snare for you on God's ordered path. If you ignore His leadership, you are sure to fall into one of the devil's snares. Psalm 17:4 states, "Concerning the works of men, by the Word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer."
