Ruling Your Own Spirit

On Sunday night I preached from Prov. 25:28 which states, "He that hath not rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls." Prov 16:32 says, "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." I did not intend to extend the three articles on pornography, but I do feel the message has an application to the subject. My thought is this: A person who does not rule his or her own spirit will be ruled by the things of this world. The truth put forth in Prov.25 is that any area that a person does not rule will become an entrance for the enemy. Notice what a person that hath no rule over his spirit is like: "a city that is broken down and without walls." That simply means he is open to the enemy’s attack. The wall of protection is broken down. It is within our ability to rule our spirit, especially if we have been born again. Paul said in 1 Cor.9:27, "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." Paul told Timothy in 2 Tim. 2:21-22 "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." It is our responsibility to rule our own spirit, and put the guard on our lives. James 1:13-16 gives the outline of sin and death: temptation, drawn away, enticed, lust = sin, and sin "when it is finished, bringeth forth death." Sin must be stopped at the source, at the beginning when sin is presented to your heart. 1 Cor. 10:13 tells us, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." James 4:5-8 states, "Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But He giveth more grace. Wherefore He saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." Prov. 4:23-27 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil." Any area of life you do not rule becomes an entrance for the devil’s work in your life. Rule your own spirit or you will be ruined! (See Romans Chapter 6. and 2 Cor.5:17)
