The greatest victory in life is the victory over self
I have borrowed the phrase "Unobtainable Morality" from House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt, D- Mo. The phrase was coined in a speech in opposition to impeachment of President Clinton, and in response to the resignation of Speaker-elect Bob Livingston, R- LA. The sound bite went as follows: "We need to stop destroying imperfect people on the altar of unobtainable morality." (emphasis mine)
I believe it is reasonable to interpret this statement to mean that since there are no longer any American men with moral purity, we should drop that ideal as a standard for U.S. public servants. It seems clear that Mr. Gephardt is admitting to immorality himself. One may conclude that it is guilt, not mercy or reason which drives him to call for this cowardly retreat from morality.
Allow me to put this same reasoning into some other aspects of American life.
- Example 1: "We need to stop flunking imperfect medical students on the altar of unobtainable grades."
- Example 2: "We need to stop fining imperfect drivers on the altar of unobtainable driving laws."
The truth is that sexual purity is obtainable by the grace of God. There are still American men who have never had sexual relations outside the bounds of marriage. Many remain committed to tell the truth regardless of the outcome. The most pure motivation to this "Puritanical...Purity"* is love and fear for the God of the Bible, and a desire to be obedient to His statutes.
Consider selected admonitions from God's book, the Bible:
- "And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings." Proverbs 5:20-21
- "But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul." Proverbs 6:32
- Consider the potential result of instituting
in America the same law God had for Israel in the days of Moses: "If
a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall
both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman:
so shalt thou put away evil from Israel." Deuteronomy
"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour." Exodus 20:16
If we follow Rep. Gephardt's advise to stop demanding that a standard of morality be upheld by our government officials, we must surely reap the natural punishment of such infidelity, as well as the wrath of God when we face Him one day.
Representative Gephardt is in agreement with the Bible in one sentence of his closing appeal. He said, "The only way we stop this spiral is for all of us to finally say - enough." That's right, sir! Enough Adultery! Enough lack of self control! Enough pride! Enough rejection of the God of the Bible!
Thanks to my son-in-law, David Thompson, for the above article written while visiting for Christmas. I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 8:11 which states, "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil."
