Long Hair

Many people are surprised to hear that the Bible does address the length of hair on men and women. Does God care about the length of a man's hair? Does Jesus have long hair? The only men in the Bible who had long hair were the Nazarite in Numbers 6:1-12 and the rebel Absolom (2 Samuel 14:26; 15:1-2). Of course Jesus was neither.

The artist's portrayal of a long-haired Jesus doesn't fit Scripture as well as the custom of the time of Christ. Busts of various rulers of His time and after show them to have short hair.

Christ is our Great High Priest and according to Ezek. 44:20 they did not have long hair. (The Jewish Talmud gives instruction to cut it every 30 days and even specifies the "Julian" cut or Caesar cut.) Look at some of the busts from that time. Most artists show Christ with long hair and the Apostles with short.

Please turn to 1 Corinthians 9:1 and notice the Apostle Paul states in this verse that he has seen the Lord. Two chapters later in 11:14-15 he states, "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair it is a shame unto him? But if the woman have long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering." "Shame" means abomination. Something that stinks in the nostrils of God.

You may rest assured that if Paul saw Jesus in Chapter 9 and states two chapters later that long hair on a man is a shame, Jesus did not have long hair.

Actually , there must be a distinction between the man and the woman more so than the anatomy. I have actually opened the door for what I thought was a woman. It is not right for a man to have to look at the anatomy to know if it is a male or female. God made the distinction and expects us to honor it.

The woman's hair is given for a covering, showing her submission to the headship of her husband's authority (v10). The man's head is uncovered (by hair) showing his authority under God. (His ears are uncovered for hearing God.) According to God's word it is a shame for a man to have long hair.
