In Luke 11:45-52, Jesus deals with the lawyers (another name for scribes).
In v.46 "ye lade men with burdens grievious to be borne." In v.47, "for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets and your fathers killed them." In v48, "ye allow the deeds of your fathers." Then in vs.49-51, Jesus tells them they are following in the footsteps of their fathers. Now watch the indictment of Jesus in v.52: "Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge : ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered."
What in the world could the KEY OF KNOWLEDGE BE? A key is a device used to open they way into, as in a door. By their false interpretation of the Old Testament Scriptures, they had taken away the true key or method of understanding. 2 Peter 3:16 states, "they wrest the Scriptures unto their own destruction." "Wrest" means "stretch out." Paul told Timothy in 2 Tim.3:13 that "Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. Notice again Luke 11:52, "ye entered not in yourselves (deceived), and them that were entering in ye hindered."(deceiving). Matt. 18:6, Mk.9:42 and Luke 17:2 warn, "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."
How does a person "Take away the key of knowledge?" (See Mark 7:1-13)
1. v6.They "honored Christ with their lips, but their heart was far from Him."
They were religious actors. They are still with us today. Many parents are turning their children's hearts from Christ through their hypocrisy. This robs them as well as others of the key of knowledge. This happens with co- workers and neighbors as well.
2. v7 "in vain they worship Christ, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." The second way people take away the key of knowledge is by perverting the Word of God by false doctrine. Doctrine is the body of truth that is essential for a born again relationship with God. Your Church, your baptism, your works, your charismatic experience, your good deeds will never save you. Eph. 2:8-9; Tit. 3:5; Rom. 10:9-13
3. v8-9 They lay "aside the commandment of God" and "reject the commandment of God that ye may keep your own tradition." In all these years of sharing the Gospel with people, I have had hundreds to reject Jesus Christ as they held to their church traditions or church denomination. When a Church or denomination lays aside the Word of God or even rejects the word of God for tradition, they take away the key of knowledge.
THE KEY OF KNOWLEDGE IS TRUTH! John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
