The greatest victory in life is the victory over self
In his September 18 article "Some Are A Disgrace To Religion" Bill Campbell unwisely and unkindly lumped all fundamentalist into the same group. Over the years we have been given enough information about the activities of Mr. Campbell and the so-called "Rev" to know what "disgrace to religion" means to both of them. For instance, Mr. Campbell reveals that the "Rev" , "called a fellow man of the cloth an unprintable expletive." Wouldn't this qualify as a "disgrace to religion"? He later revealed that he was speaking of Dr. Jerry Falwell. At one time Dr. Falwell was an Independent Baptist. I heard him speak on several occasions. While I am not one of his followers, I have confidence that Dr. Falwell does not use "unprintable expletives" in his speech, public or private; and that he does not tell dirty jokes, drink alcoholic drinks or indulge in other vices we would consider unbecoming of a man of God. Mr. Campbell has given us no such confidence in "the Rev".
Now to the Subject at hand: Mr. Campbell wrote, "Fundamentalists of any stripe really bother me." (Wow! That is a sweeping generalization if I have ever read one.) Mr. Campbell has also credited fundamentalists with religious wars. He has failed, however, to note that it was Bible believing fundamentalists who were dying at the hands of those we bothered because we would not bow to their state religion. Please, search the history books and show us where any Bible believing fundamentalist (like me) ever burned anyone at the stake or fed anyone to the lions.
What is it about fundamentalists that bother people like Mr. Campbell? Perhaps it is the following tenants of fundamentalism that they find so offensive:
- We believe in the inerrancy and authority of the Holy Bible, King James Version. We believe that the claim of the Bible to be the inspired Word of God excludes all other such claims. We do not believe all religions are different roads to heaven.
- We believe all must be Born Again through faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and that without the New birth no human will enter heaven.
- We make up much of the nation's voice calling America back to God in repentance and righteousness. We have been saying for years ( read some of my previous patriotic articles) that America is headed for trouble because our nation has turned from the God of the Bible.
- We lay the blame for our present trouble on sin and its consequence. "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." Prov. 14:34
A Bible believing fundamentalist loves the Lord, God's Word, the souls of men and our land of liberty. We believe in freedom of religion (all faiths). WE ARE WILLING TO FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO BELIEVE WHAT YOU CHOOSE, BUT WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO TELL YOU THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, ONE BIBLE, ONE FAITH, ONE CHRIST AND ONLY ONE WAY TO HEAVEN.
